Dexter gardener pitches bringing 'The World Cup of Gardening' to Detroit

By Cole Bertsos

Renowned gardener and business owner John Cullen has a big idea in mind for Detroit's Belle Isle: He wants to compete with other well-known gardeners in what he called "The World Cup of Gardening," according to a report on MLive.

The Dexter resident and owner of Celtic Gardens, in Dexter, made a pitch to the Detroit City Council Tuesday to bring what he envisions will be a major event to Detroit's Island Park, the report said.

Council member James Tate made the arrangements for Cullen's presentation, though there were no actions taken on the proposal by City Council.

Cullen said with the architecture, the waterfront and the gardens, an event like this would shed some much-needed exposure on the "beautiful campus." He told council he believes the even could bring between 60,000 to 80,000 people during the 10-day event, but that he had seen similar events gather more than 200,000, MLive reported.

AnnArbor.com: the MLive article you link to includes a link to a previous AnnArbor.com article about Mr. Cullen. The link doesn't work, your site returns a "page not found" error. Also, you refer to "Detroit's Island Park" in bold. Island and park should not be capitalized, they are not a proper name. The name of the park is Belle Isle.

I must confess that I do not know diddly squat about flowers, gardening or even how to keep my own house plants alive. But ANYTHING that draws people, beauty and revenue to the once prestigious Belle Isle has my vote. My faith in Detroit's City Counsel is not exactly peaking these days, but I do hope they see the potential in this opportunity.
