Dexter Leader: Dexter High School debaters earn honors in national championship debate

Two girls from Dexter High School became the highest-ranked varsity debate team ever to hail from Michigan, according to the Dexter Leader.

Em Winfield, a 2012 DHS graduate, and sophomore Amelia Sadler, known as debate team “Dexter SW,” competed in the National Forensic League's National Championship Tournament in Indianapolis June 10-15.

They debated on whether the United States federal government should increase space exploration or space development beyond Earth.

The Dexter girls won half of their elimination rounds and went 11-1 in preliminary rounds, the Leader reported. Sadler and Winfield also earned a variety of accolades, the Leader article said, including the George Ziegelmueller Award, named after a Wayne State University professor, for the best debate team in the state.
