Dexter school district narrows down interim superintendent search

By Julie Baker

The Dexter schools Board of Education has a candidate in mind for the interim superintendent job when Mary Marshall leaves for a new position in a few weeks, the Dexter Leader reports.

Mary Marshall

Dennis Desmarais, a longtime educator from the Riverview Community School District, toured the district and met with administrators and officials last week, the report said.

The board was impressed with Desmarais, who served in Riverview for 36 years, five as superintendent before retiring in June 2011, the Leader said. Officials expect to approve his appointment at the next board meeting on Dec. 17.

Marshall is leaving Dexter after 20 years in the district. She is to become the superintendent for Pentwater Public Schools, a small school district located in Pentwater Township along Lake Michigan, about 80 miles north of Grand Rapids.

I hope that Mr. Desmarais is an excellent contract negotiator. All contracts (including administarton) expire in 2013 and it would be a shame if the Board and Mr. Desmarais could not secure new contracts before the permanent superintendent is hired. Of course Mr. Desmarais will be extremely busy as he is following the lead of the Board and building an even bigger adminstrative team for Dexter Schools...all with the guidance of the same consulting firm that tagged Desmarais as a candidate. Crazy I know, but too bad that Dexter and the WISD didn't form a partnership to have WISD superintendent Munzel step in as interim superintendent for the next few months. But that would be counter to the business model in Michigan where every school district needs its separate administration (with Dexter's getting bigger) and then the county having its' own superintendent.
