Dexter Village buys a second home on Forest Street for redevelopment

By Lisa Allmendinger

The Dexter Village Council unanimously approved the purchase of a second home on Forest Street Monday night - this time at 8087 Forest St., which will become part of a redevelopment of the area close to downtown.

In May, the village bought a home at 8077 Forest for $56,500, also on a “short sale” from the bank, then invited Habitat for Humanity to take any useable items from the home and area fire departments conducted training exercises inside last month.

Monday night, Village Manager Donna Dettling said, “The bank liked our offer of $85,000 (for the 8087 property) and moved quickly.”

The village is expected to close on the home and 0.23 acres of property on Aug. 18.

Following an inspection of the home, it was determined that about $20,000 would be needed in repairs, but the village plans to demolish the home that’s located near the Broad Street DAPCO site, which the village is looking to redevelop.

“I would like to ask Blue Star, the company that will be tearing down 8077 Forest to give us a quote to demolish this property to see what kind of a deal with can get to take them both down at the same time,” Dettling wrote in a memo to the village council.
