Financing plan approval marks next step for wellness center proposed in Dexter

By Lisa Allmendinger

A planned wellness center on Baker Road in Dexter Village took a step forward Monday with the Dexter Village Council's unanimous approval of a county brownfield redevelopment financing plan.

BST Investments plans to develop 88,000 square feet of commercial space at 2810 Baker Road and expects to make a $9 million investment in the center, according to a project summary.

Included in the eligible requested financing is $230,000 for demolition of the building on the property, $48,000 in site remediation, and $24,000 in administrative costs. The remediation would go to clean up soil contamination from previous light industrial tenants.

“The plan includes $312,000 in tax increment financing activities, which will be reimbursed through local and state property tax increment revenues,” the project summary states.

Construction on the 7.4-acre parcel is expected to begin in 2011 and end in 2012, generating 80 jobs.

Eligible activities must be completed within five years of the brownfield plan approval, said Brett Lenert of Washtenaw County’s Economic Development and Energy Department.

The next step, Lenert said, would be approval of the Washtenaw County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Board followed by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners.

Village President Shawn Keough was absent from the vote with an excused absence.

2810 Baker Road was the home of Jenkins Equipment; here's an ad for their Sweepster equipment back in the day, 1970. http://www.weekendfreedommachines.com/sweepster/sweepster_110112120140_1.jpg
