Outdoor ice rinks open in Dexter and Saline

By Julie Baker

The cold weather so far this winter has helped the village of Dexter and city of Saline open their outdoor ice rinks.

Dexter opened its rink in downtown Monument Park on Wednesday — earlier than usual, the Dexter Leader reports.

Warm weather last year caused the Dexter rink to be closed for the entire season except for one week in January, Dexter Patch reported.

The rink is open Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Saline's ice rink also opened this week in the northeast corner of Henne Field, just off Bennett Street. Rink hours are Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

People skate at their own risk and safety gear is recommended for both rinks.

I went to skate with my partner tonight at 7pm in Saline. What a great area. It is very well lit with ample parking. There were the two of us, a family with 3 kids, a dad with 2 kids, and 2 college age girls enjoying the ice. THANK YOU!

Although I do not use the ice rink myself, I think it's a wonderful idea for the community. It's an inexpensive opportunity for families and a great way to get outside and enjoy winter! Thank you to all the people and organizations who give their time and money to make these things possible!

Heaven forbid A2 would allow such a non making money entity be available to anyone who would enjoy the outdoors at a minimal cost. Now if you can set up some type of art fair next to one of these money could be made and taxes could be collected and A2 would be happy.

You're kidding. I can't believe Ann Arbor abolished all of the skating rinks. Seems really backward to me. I suppose it boils down to not being able to afford the salaries of the people who would service them. There were many of them before as someone else said. Sad.

Won't someone (besides the orthopaedic surgeons) think of the children!

"Back in the day" the city froze a number of natural rinks. I remember Vets Park, Burns Park, Allmendinger and Community Park (now Scheffler) off the top, but I bet there were others.
