Police believe man is 'casing' homes to rob in western Washtenaw County

By John Counts

Police have received reports of a man who may be looking for residences to rob.

According to a release from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, a male in his mid-20s driving a tan minivan could be "casing residences for potential burglaries in Scio Township, Webster Township and the Dexter area."

Police urge people to report any suspicious activity to metro dispatch at (734) 971-8400.

Yes, just call Metro Dispatch to report suspicious or criminal activity: they'll eventually figure out WHAT COUNTY you're reporting from and may even have a deputy come check on you in a week or so. Honestly, maybe THIS IS a would-be burglar who's got your home on his list of places to go to pick up "extra income" - and maybe he too knows how little chance there is of Metro Dispatch getting anyone even near where he's "working." Has anyone in the subject area gotten quotes on home security systems that would adequately deter / block burglaries? Anyone?

A better description would be helpful. Although I live south of this area my home was recently broken into. White male, 20's, dark brown hair cut short, scruffy beard, 6' Tall and scrawny. I hope A2.com updates this article.

In a different subject every summer I have teenagers mostly black young man coming to our door trying to sell magazine. They say it is my job training, they are well dressed shirt and tie. One year I've called the City of AA asking if these people had a licence to sell, of course the did not. A week later I saw a Ohio licensed big van dropping off these young man and woman. Then they pick then up at gas station or a local point. One year I felt bad and bought sixty dollars worth payed with a check never saw the magazines. I've herd they send out these people to check out the residence. Yet again two nights ago at 9:30 PM they were here again. Did anyone else had the same issues?

I have to say as a responsible gun owner with a CPL I am embarrassed but not at all surprised by the comments of my fellow gun owners. Honestly? It's one of the reasons I am armed all day. I have to worry about the crooks out to steal my stuff and the nutjobs out to shoot me down.

Thursday night at 1:30 am a white man was walking down Scio Church Rd. near Lima Center Rd. It was kind of strange. No van. Anyways, duly noted and armed and loaded.

@ Julia, In the late 1980's thru the mid-1990's, I suffered from an ulcer: 7-8 years of agony, and I mean EVERY night. I needed to eat to stay alive... and was hungry every day just as everyone else is. But the foods I ate simply would not digest, instead, forming gas and actually souring. I read countless articles on the subject, which revealed that the doctors were not treating me correctly: the root of the ulcer was caused by bacteria. I brought this to the attention of my doctors, who laughed at me, and proclaimed "I'm a specialist too, and these articles are wrong." Finally (2 years later), the doctor told me that he had attended a conference a month prior, and lo and behold, the articles were correct: ulcers were indeed, caused by bacteria. He gave me the suggested treatment: 14 days of anti-biotics, pepto-bismal, and pepcid. two weeks later, I was cured. BUT... during the time I had the ulcer, I would go for long nightly walks, in an attempt to feel better. Like the colicky baby, I had good reason. This article is ridiculous.

I saw a black man in his 30s sitting in late model Lexus on Brooks avenue yesterday morning. When I returned from running errands, he was still there talking on his phone. He does not live in the neighborhood.

Did anyone check the back seat? Maybe he's got a colicky baby back there. I know I've driven around my neighborhood with an almost-asleep baby on board. Glad my neighbors aren't armed to the teeth and psychotic.

What's the connection between "armed to the teeth" and "psychotic"?? - there're about 100 million armed citizens, but there's only rare, sporadic incidents involving "armed AND psychotic" individuals. How rare? -- You'd have to sort through several million armed individuals to find ONE psychotic. FWIW: for every story about people driving their colicky child around, there's at least one other telling of motivated criminals actually stopping to assess someone's house as a future target for burglary. BTW: we all hope you never are the victim of burglars or any kind of aggressive criminals: from your description, your neighborhood appears to be un-psychotic AND unarmed. Yummy prey for those with criminal intent. All my neighbors are un-psychotic AND armed - which is the better bet when you think about it. ;-)

Sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday morning, our two orange/yellow Old Town kayaks were stolen on Little Crooked Lake (Western Washtenaw County). IF they find the tan van, and our kayaks in the back, then they've found a thief.......I'm checking Craigslist every day to see if someone is stupid enough to try to sell them.

I think we've hit an all time low for vagueness. I saw a dog going up the sidewalk sniffing every extension. It had four legs and no collar. It will probably be back to dump some trash.

That phone # is a recording that takes a long time to muddle through. I had a suspicious incident (well, two, actually) just west of the locations mentioned and had a bit of a time actually connecting to an officer. The first incident involved a white mountain bike - could this be a "quiet scout" ahead of the van?

What really irks me is that people say O Ypsi is crime ridden when, when I am reading more and more everyday Ann Arbor had this happen and this happen and I can't remember the last time something big happened anywhere in Ypsilanti. Hate to say it folks, but I think Ypsilanti City and Township seem to be on the ball more so then your police force in Ann Arbor. O wait, thats right, you are laying off your force and we here in the township just added 4 more. Glad I live on my side of town. Time to start a watch folks. We did and and make our force known.

RJA you are an obvious county employee! You and they are incapable of doing their job, my proof stands as a 911 call in a rural community took almost 3 hrs to answer and I since pledged to protect myself. Now we have a vehicle description, and a warning ,yet the protection I pay for cant get a handle on the problem? really???????? Another reason we need another means it is called self defense. Cut the Police they lay in wait to ticket me for no seat belt yet allow thugs to case my house as they drink coffeee

Always watching for those that might be casing the area to rob. (especially in and on country roads) Usually not a lot of traffic, so easier to spot. @ Bill....Police can and do, DO their jobs, and can always use help from the citizens in the county.

Race is referred to all the time as far as descriptions of criminals, or those suspected of crimes. It's part of the description and has nothing to do with racism. Criminals come in all stripes.

Sat, Jul 28, 2012 : 4:28 a.m.

You can't identify the race of person who is even convicted of a crime in Michigan. For whatever reason. Profiling has sure cut down crime in the areas where the police deploy this tactic, though. Maybe the occasional lawsuit is a cost-effective trade-off.
