Village of Dexter to begin hydrant flushing Monday

By Lisa Allmendinger

Next week marks the start of the Village of Dexter’s hydrant flushing season when crews will begin opening hydrants throughout the village to help maintain the quality of the village’s water system.

So, take note residents in the Cedars of Dexter, Huron Farms, Westridge, the Dexter Schools, the Industrial Park, Walkabout Creek, and Dexter Crossing, the hydrants in your areas will be opened beginning Monday.

During the week of June 11, staff will be working downtown and in the “Old Village” area.

As crews flush hydrants, there may be some discoloration of the water, according to information from village staff. Residents who experience “rust colored” water should simply run the cold water tap for a few minutes to clear the household pipes.

The discoloration is caused by a natural buildup of minerals in the water system. Some natural mineral deposits are stirred up in the water pipes when fire hydrants are first turned on.

Residents are asked to try to avoid washing white clothes during flushing times.

If residents have any questions, contact the Village Utility Department at 426-4572 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

This is news? Hey Dexter! Next November, they're going to open up those same hydrants and pump that water out so the hydrants don't freeze. Watch out for work crews!
