Calling all Civil War fans.

The Dexter Area Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help with the production of Civil War Days at Gordon Hall, which will take place June 10-12.

Gordon Hall, just outside the Village of Dexter, is located at 8341 Island Lake Road. Civil War Days “is expected to be a showcase event in the State of Michigan’s sesquicentennial celebration of the American Civil War,” according to the Dexter Area Historical Society.

Included in the festivities will be a display of 1860s military and civilian culture on the Gordon Hall property, which is owned by the nonprofit historical society. There will be a military encampment of the 4th Michigan Regiment, Company A, plus military drills, period artifacts, living historians, and period music.

Also planned are meals from the 1860s that can be purchased by visitors, games for children from the era, and a tea and fashion show. President and Mrs. Lincoln are also expected to attend.

There will be a gospel sing, a baseball game and a pie auction, as well as the creation of a 34-star American Flag.

According to information from the event, several sons of the Village of Dexter served in Company A during the Civil War, and Jeffords Street in the village is named in honor of one of them.

Colonel Harrison Jeffords died in the Battle of Gettysburg at age 26.

A meeting for event volunteers will take place at 7 p.m. May 2 at the Dexter District Library, and there are all kinds of opportunities available, from ticket sales to baking to crowd control.

In fact, if you cannot attend the event but want to get involved, there are opportunities for anyone who is interested. Contact Carol Jones at cjones@villageofdexter.org or call 734-426-8114.

All proceeds from the event will help to restore Gordon Hall.

In 2013 we plan to be in Gettysburg celebrating their 150. Sounds like Dexter is doing it right. Gearing up for a horrific battle that lost more men then in all our wars combined.
