Webster Township pole barn housing vintage vehicles destroyed in fire

By Amalie Nash

A large pole barn in Webster Township housing three vintage vehicles, farm equipment and hay was destroyed in an early morning fire today, Dexter fire officials said.

By the time a passerby noticed the fire in the building on Gregory Road, near Mast Road, just before 2 a.m., it had already collapsed, Dexter Fire Lt. Tim Burke said.

The family didn't realize the 60-foot by 80-foot building was on fire until firefighters arrived, Burke said. By that time, it was too late to save any of the contents or the rabbit and cat who lived in the building, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Burke said. No one was injured.

Burke said the building, which had electric and gas service, was used to house the vehicles and farm equipment. He did not have specifics on the vintage cars, but said they were destroyed.

A damage estimate has not yet been determined.

Firefighters were at the scene from about 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. extinguishing the blaze and pulling the debris from the building. Scio Township firefighters assisted.
