Ann Arbor police continue to investigate incident that injured University of Michigan student

By Lee Higgins

The Ann Arbor Police Department has denied a Freedom of Information Act request filed by AnnArbor.com seeking a copy of a police report detailing a domestic dispute Sunday that injured a University of Michigan student.

The 22-year-old student suffered a cut to his forehead during the incident at Weber's Inn on Jackson Avenue, police said. Police would not release his name.

The student was taken by ambulance to University of Michigan Hospital and was later released.

The victim called police about 11:26 p.m., reporting his girlfriend struck him with a glass object. But when police responded, they said he was uncooperative.

The department denied the request for the report, saying the incident is "under investigation" and releasing it would "interfere with law enforcement proceedings."

I too wondered about this story. It really is not what I would deem as particularly news worthy but it is up to AA.com to decide what they publish. I would however like to see references to the freedom of information act dropped from news stories. This is just a fight. Sure its a DV and DV is a horrible crime, but lacking some extraordinary circumstances why file a FOIA? The victim was uncooperative. Perhaps he does not want to expound on being beat up by his girlfriend. I do not see what value a mention of FOIA is to a story, unless the story is based on a presumption that FOIA was violated for some scurrilous reason. We don't care how you get the news, just get it. I think FOIA helped kill investigative, professional journalism. Gone is the need to develop sources, just go demand the information. Also, when you put the reason why the request was denied, that tends to indicate whoever requested it does not understand the law. AAPD's response is one of the exceptions to releasing info under FOIA. I am content with aa.com, though I would like to see some tweaking. And please stop putting in references to FOIA unless it is the news itself.

I find it interesting to read the goingson in A2 since I moved over two years ago. What puzzles me is why people are also sounding off about how much they hate annarbor.com. Why keep reading if you dislike the coverage so much-get over yourself and publish your own paper if you don't like the phrasing, the information reported or you just want to grammatically correct everyone. Publish something yourself and quit wasting space ranting over and over. This is not to say that if there is some gross error it shouldn't be commented on...

I know annarbor.com is dedicated, first and foremost, to LOCAL news, but isn't this story sorta scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Way to be on top of the important news annarbor.com. Everything that is going on in this city you choose to FOIA a dispute between boy/girl friend when the "victim" wouldn't cooperate with the police. Seems like she hit him with a glass ashtray. End of story
