Event in Pittsfield Township looks to 'Stuff a Blue Goose' with donated school supplies

By Lisa Carolin

Walmart in Pittsfield Township is the place to be Sunday between noon-4 p.m. to "Stuff a Blue Goose."

That's the nickname for the Michigan State Police patrol cars, and one of them will be parked by the Walmart at 7000 W. Michigan Avenue (near State Road) during those hours for the purpose of receiving donated school supplies.

The goal is to fill the Blue Goose with donations for kids who could use a little extra help when they return to school next month. Backpacks, notebooks, writing utensils and more will all be accepted.

The purpose is to prepare students for a successful school year. It's a collaboration of the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety, the Michigan State Police, and the Washtenaw County Department of Community Services. Donations don't have to be purchased at Walmart.

The idea dates back to 2007 when Trooper Tod Peterson at the White Pigeon Detachment on the west side of the state launched it. Since then, there have been many successful Blue Goose events including one last December at the same location.

Organizers are hoping to pack the patrol car full with school supplies by 4 p.m. Sunday.

Hope folks will help out with this. The dollar store provides a wide variety of school supplies at, of course, a very responsible price. Take advantage of this and help out with those who are less fortunate.
