Downed wires leave 2,700 DTE customers without power in Scio Township

By John Counts

Update: Power had been restored in some areas by 9:10 p.m. but about 1,600 customers remained without power shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday. The outage area straddles Interstate 94 west of Zeeb Road in Scio Township. DTE representatives said earlier that they were not expecting full restoration until about midnight.

Power lines brought down by broken tree limbs left 2,700 without power and stalled traffic on Jackson Avenue near Zeeb Road in Scio Township starting around 5 p.m. Thursday.

"We have a crew on the scene and they have identified two sections of wire down," said John Austerberry of DTE Energy.

As of 6 p.m., Austerberry didn't yet have an estimate of when power would be restored.

Scio Township Fire Chief Carl Ferch said the traffic light at Jackson and Zeeb was out, which was backing up traffic. The wires came down in the 6100 block of Park Road, Ferch said.

Check back for more information as it becomes available.

So there's no evidence of some people CAUSING the tree limbs to fall on power lines where they did? Hopefully it's only coincidence that this was centered just north of the "French" subdivision which has had much crime during the past few months.

There is absolutly nothing in this article that suggests the problem was "manmade". Country French Estates, as well as Arbor Pointe, Polo Fields, Hometowne Village and most the neighborhoods in Dexter/Scio have had incidents this past summer of unlocked vehicles being accessed. To suggest that the power outage was somehow related to Country French Estates is idiotic at best.

Not unless people climbed 25 feet in the air and broke a 1 and a half foot in diameter tree off, pushed it into the lines, then escaped the ensuing fire / electrical shorting and crazy sparks showers. But I agree, the "French" are suspicious.

The tree fell across the lines right by our home. The 45 minutes of fire and plasma pulses was quite an awesome sight until DTE shut it off. Scared the bajezus out of the kids. Missed the game. I think my generator needs a new carb.

My friend is in the affected area and he was planning on it I think. I'd invite him over but I don't have TV service.
