Dr. Gregory Dalack has been appointed the new chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School, pending Regents approval, according to a statement released by the university.
Dalack had been serving as the interim chair of the department since 2007. He received his M.D. from Columbia University and went on the complete his residency and clinical research fellowship at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York.

"I am both honored and very excited to have the opportunity to serve as chair," Dalack said in the press release. "We have a very strong department on the cusp of a new level of productivity and greater national recognition."
Dalack's history with the medical school began in 1992 when he served as the chief of the Mental Health Clinic at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. He has gone on to serve in other positions, such as chief of the VA Psychiatry Service and vice-chair for Education and Academic Affairs.
Dalack, a father of three, specializes in schizophrenia and mood disorders. His research has focused on the treatment of schizophrenic illnesses and the relationship between nicotine addiction and schizophrenia.
"I am so pleased that the department will soon enter a new phase in its storied development under the talented leadership of Gregory Dalack," John Greden, M.D., said in the release.Â
Greden was the previous chair before he stepped down in 2007 after 22 years.
