DTE Energy reports about 3,000 customers in Ann Arbor have lost power

By Heidi Fenton

An estimated 3,000 customers are without power in Ann Arbor, according to DTE Energy.

The outages - concentrated along State Street near Burns Park and the Lansdowne neighborhood off Scio Church Road - started just before 6 p.m., and likely are the result of excess power use after temperatures climbed into the 90s around Washtenaw County Tuesday, said Spokesman Len Singer.

A desk sergeant with the Ann Arbor police department said traffic lights are out at Main Street and Ann Arbor Saline Road, and at several intersections along Packard and State Streets. No major traffic problems were reported as of 8 p.m.

Singer said power likely would be restored before midnight.

“When you have a heavy volume of usage like this, the system doesn’t have alternate facilities to be able to serve customers,” he said. “Crews are working on the restoration and we expect we should have things resolved yet tonight."

Additional scattered outages were reported near Geddes Road and in Ann Arbor Hills and another 115 customers near Bemis and Fosdick roads east of Saline were without power after a line went down earlier this evening.

The temperature in Ann Arbor as of 7:30 p.m. was 91, according to the National Weather Service. A heat advisory is in effect for Washtenaw County through midnight Wednesday.

All the people blasting their air conditioning stress the grid a lot. You can get a separate meter for your AC that charges a lower rate in exchange for DTE being able to shut off the power in these kinds of situations. Sure, your AC is off, but if enough people had them that DTE could bring demand back down to within capacity, your fridge would still be working and you could still cook dinner.

Is anyone here besides me concerned about the people in the homes affected by this outage? It's blazing hot out. People with medical conditions and the elderly are in a really dangerous situation when the power is out during 95+ degree temperatures.

Naaaaaah. Why be concerned about others in this Randian paradise we call Michigan? Good Night and Good Luck

Yes, I am concerned...My power has now returned, but I have 90 year old neighbor, I checked on her and made sure she was OK and gave her some water. We should all be doing this..

This is no good. I'm being forced to surf the internet on my phone. I really hope that 2pm estimate doesn't include all outages in Ann Arbor.

Power back on a little before 10pm in this area. It was a good excuse to go outside and talk with our neighbors. Glad the old folks homes weren't without power for too long. Hope everybody is okay.
