Editorial cartoon in Dexter High School paper strikes some as bullying

By Cole Bertsos

A recent editorial cartoon depicting two students fighting which appeared in the Dexter High School newspaper, The Squall, has gotten a lot of people wondering if the publication crossed a line, according to an article on the Dexter Patch.

The story said the cartoon showed an Advanced Placement (AP) student and an International Baccalaureate (IB) student fighting, and was alongside an unsigned editorial criticizing the new IB program.

The report said the IB students called the cartoon as well as the editorial forms of bullying. One IB student also stated that since the cartoon ran, some IB students fear coming to school because they think they could be physically assaulted, the Patch reported.

Overall this is much ado about little. However, after linking to the other story and blowing up the cartoon, I do see an issue. The idea behind the story is that the IB program is fighting with the AP program for funding dollars; and the IB program is winning. However, if you look at the characters in the cartoon, there is no fight at all. Clearly, the AP student is smiling as it strangles the IB student who apparently has either passed out or died (X's for eyes). Perhaps if the cartoon actually represented what the story was was about - maybe 2 stick figures actually fighting, with different sized piles of money in their hands - then there would be less blow-back. Still, I do not see in this a good reason to fear coming to school. Good story over a controversial funding issue that was poorly illustrated.

Congrat's to the PC crowd for raising a generation of little sissies (can I say that?) that is offended at the drop of a hat. Better keep juniors room waiting for them after the real world chews them up and spits them out.

Yep, just what I was going to comment on - political correctness, the downfall of our country.

Lots of good comments --eyeheart and vivian in particular-- on this ridiculous over-reaction to what should be a non-issue. My advice to the young students who are "afraid" or have some other needless concern: G-A-F-L. And a bigger and most sincere G-A-F-L to any "adults" who might be feeding their feeling of being offended.

I don't think that the grownups in this situation are teaching the kids how to deal with their own problems very well--in fact, it sounds as if they're teaching kids to find problems where none exist. But I confess that I don't know the whole context of this story. Is there really a bullying problem in Dexter? And is it really emanating from the AP kids? Why aren't their teachers keeping them too busy with homework to hassle IB kids (that is, if they can't each them enough history, philosophy, and literature to get them to emulate civilized human beings instead of little barbarians)?

Based on the V shaped eyebrow and straight mouth tilted at 17 degrees it seems clear the stick figure on the left needs anger management classes. The stick figure on the right may need a stick figure physician quickly. It is never a good sign when a stick figures eyes go to the x mode. couple that with the tongue extruding from the mouth and the stick figure on the right needs medical assistance. I am also concerned that there are an uneven number of stars emanating from the cloud. What does that suggest?

Well, I can tell you that I'm not going to set foot in there until this is resolved, that's for sure. But just in case, what did you say the address of this place is, again?

I know what AP classes are, and took them. But I still don't know what IB is. I suppose it does not relate to bowels?

So, who are they and their parents going to sue? Talk about being afraid of your shadow.

If two half drawn stick figures with a cloud around them make thees "students fear coming to school ", they are in for a long, miserable life, looking for offense around every corner. Are we sure we are talking about Dexter? Usually this level of lunacy only happens in Ann Arbor.

Due to a total news blackout many people are unaware that some time ago there was a leak under the west side of the dome and a flood of OZonian insanity ( code named super storm stupid ) swept westward as far as Dexter....

Oh it's Dexter all right. They locked down the schools when a grown man was seen carrying a stick. No joke.
