U.S. News ranks University of Michigan No. 28 college for undergraduate education

University of Michigan ranked as the No. 4 public university in a recent U.S. News report.

The U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan 28th nationally for undergraduate education, up a spot from last year.

U-M came in as the No. 4 public university, behind the University of California's Berkley and Los Angeles campuses and the University of Virginia. The U.S. News rankings were released Tuesday, Sept. 10.

It's standing room only in some Ann Arbor Public Schools classrooms after 36 teachers were cut for this school year.

Classes pushing 40 students have resulted in shared desks and standing room only for some subjects at Pioneer High School, said James Svensson, parent of a freshmen at the school.

“I’m afraid my daughter won’t get the quality education that she needs,” Svensson said.

No bugs about it: New website helps users identify Michigan insects

For Dr. Leslie Mertz, the crawlers and flyers of the insect world are a source of fascination.

"My favorite insect is whichever one I looked at last," she said, chuckling.

To share her passion for nature's smaller creatures, Mertz, a lecturer in the biology department at Eastern Michigan University, helped launch an interactive website, www.knowyourinsects.org, to help Michiganders identify the orders and suborders of insects in the state.

Fundraising campaigns aren't built in a day.

University of Michigan unveiled a $200 million gift from New York real estate tycoon Stephen M. Ross early Wednesday morning; and while it took only a few hours for the higher education world to learn of the gift, it took college officials years to work with Ross and secure the contribution.

That's in part because Ross' gift is not only intended to provide funding for scholarships and new and upgraded buildings at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and on the athletic campus, but also to spur other donors to action.
