Every week Ypsilanti school district spokeswoman Emma Jackson sends out a note to local media, highlighting achievements and upcoming events.
Here's this weeks:
Smart runner. Ypsilanti High School cross country harrier, Anna Kluitenberg, a junior, finished 107th in a field of 246 runners during the state tournament. Anna has a 4.00 GPA and finished in the top half of the field, which means she earned an All State All Academic Award from the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association. Congratulations Anna!
Clothes Closet now open. Donations are needed to keep the district’s award winning Clothes Closet stocked for families in need. Gently used clothing for infants to adults, including maternity wear, are accepted and the inventory has expanded to include baby supplies and linens for the kitchen and bedroom. The Closet is open 1-4:30 every Wednesday when school is in session. Students and their families who meet eligibility requirements can utilize the service located at 1076 Ecorse Rd. Destination Lansing! A group of West and East Middle School students will travel to Lansing Nov. 22-24 for the Youth in Government program, sponsored by the YMCA. Students will observe and learn more about the legislative process and will assume leadership roles under adult supervision. The students will also craft their own bills, an exercise in how our state laws are developed. Details: Julia Bryant or Tonia Porterfield, (734) 714-1300.
Get on board! The Ypsilanti Education Association, the Ypsilanti Support Staff Association and YPS administration invites the community to contribute nonperishable food items for the district’s “Bus Load of Hope” food drive to benefit Hope Clinic. Items can be dropped off between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Shadford Field parking lot, adjacent to Ypsilanti High School. Hope Clinic is a non profit that provides medical care and provides a food pantry to uninsured and low-income families in Washtenaw County. Details: (734) 714-1202
Give on! Another opportunity to help those in our community is being coordinated at Chapelle Community School, 111 S. Wallace St. The Everyone Values Everyone Clothing Drive is underway and gently used clothing for all ages can be donated at the school’s main office. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 17. The clothes will be given away on Dec. 17 between 4:30-7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Those wishing to take advantage of this free service will need to bring bags to transport clothes. When the rubber hits the road .be prepared by having the Regional Career Technical Center check your tires. For a donation of $25, students in the Auto Mechanics class will computer balance, check and adjust pressures and rotate the tires. Appointments are being scheduled Nov. 9-20.
