Ypsilanti among Michigan school districts operating at a deficit

The number of school districts in deficit jumped to 41 in the 2008-2009 school year and the Ypsilanti Public Schools is among them, according to a report by the Detroit News.

In the 2007-2008 school year, 27 districts were operating under at a deficit, but with the dramatic cuts this year in state funding, the number jumped dramatically.

Fourteen districts when into a deficit for the first time, and 20 have deficits of more than $1 million.

And yet the district bent over backwards to give the new superintendent all of the numerous perks he asked for. The district knew that they were in a tough financial situation before they went into contract negotiations with Martin, yet they allowed him to have all of the items he asked for. Change needs to start at the top.
