Eve Aronoff reveals that her new restaurant, Cuban-inspired Frita Batido, will be at 117 W. Washington St., the location of the former Cafe du Jour in downtown Ann Arbor, the Michigan Daily reports.

Aronoff told The Daily her new restaurant will not offer Cuban dishes, but "will reflect her passion for different textures and flavors and her commitment to buying fresh produce from local sources."

Aronoff is the proprietor and chef at eve the restaurant on Kingsley Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

She said Cuban culture and ingredients will inspire the food at the new restaurant. Aronoff previously said Frita Batido’s menu will be centered on two things: fritas, a kind of Cuban burger, usually made from chorizo, on an egg bun topped with shoestring potatoes. And batidos, fresh tropical fruit shakes made with crushed ice, a drop of evaporated milk and sometimes rum.

@Adam Jaskiewicz...that's why the tongue in cheek remarks...if you don't want to be labeled a "Cuban" restaurant, why name the restaurant after two Cuban menu items....just found it [the article and explanation] a tad bit odd.....lo siento

@Bridget.. YES That old commercial is the first thing that came to my mind. In elementary school I had a "Frito Bandito" Eraser on my pencil. @roadsidedinerlover It's not racist intention, it's an old commercial and character that "Frito's" used to use to sell their product in the 60's-70's!

I used to work at Cafe Du Jour and that space is VERY SMALL.I don't know how it will work for her but good luck to her in this venture. To Bridget:"Is anyone else hearing "I am the Frito Bandito" running cheerily through their heads when they read about this?" Ahhh...NO! It is BATIDO....pronounced totally differently. I don't subject myself to racist stereotypes like yours.

Regarding the pricing... this is from an article posted in January. "But it will be marked departure from eve, a French-influenced fine dining and special occasion restaurant in Kerrytown. Frita Batido will be much more informal and more affordable. We will have a fun and whimsical menu inspired by Cuban and Latin American cooking. It will be a lively place, Aronoff said. It will be very, very casual. Im a pretty casual person, so this will be right up my alley." http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/ex--top-chef-eve-aronoff-plans-to-open-new-cuban-restaurant-in-ann-arbor/

I always hate the term "authentic" when it comes to food. Cuba has bad restaurants and cooks too. If its bad food and its authentic it doesn't make it something special. I hear this about Mexican food all the time, but do you realize Mexico is a big country and has different styles and flavor profiles based on which state in Mexico you are in. If you served ribs in Engalnd and said they were authentic US ribs what would that mean? A Chicago style, a Memphis, a Kansas City, a dry rub, a wet rub, a sweet bbq sauce, a ketchupy sauce. As for eve, I wish her success. I wish I had the wallet to let me eat at eve's more often, so hopefully this place will be more value driven.

I wonder if people from Cuba sit around and pine for "Real Cuban Food" when eating Miami Cuban food?

Is anyone else hearing "I am the Frito Bandito" running cheerily through their heads when they read about this? Seriously, though, nice to have an interesting new restaurant.

Yeah. As far as I'm concerned, if it tastes good, it's good. I don't need my food to be an anthropology lesson. Besides, what's so authentic about flying in exotic ingredients at great expense to the wallet and the environment so that you can cook like you're living on the 23rd parallel? Foods are a combination of cultural influences and the local environment. When you change the environment, the food has to adapt; retaining the cultural influences will result in food that still has an ethnic, exotic feel without necessarily being authentic. At some point you have to think about it more along the lines of "what would a Cuban grandmother do with my CSA box?"

I long for Real good Cuban food. Like the stuff I get when I go to Miami...Not mush they serve on top of overcooked rice, that they serva at another local "cuban" restaruant (I wont mention any names). And while Eve is at it, I would be really impressed if she learned how to make realllllly good, authentic cuban bread! That might be good enough to get me in the front door anyway.

"have people jumping down her throat complaining that it "isn't authentic Cuban food". Who would do that in this town? :) But seriously that's actually a really got point and makes sense to me. And doundle seriously people have a major problem with the authentic angle around here.

She's trying to distance it from being called a "Cuban restaurant" so that she won't have people jumping down her throat complaining that it "isn't authentic Cuban food".

djm, I'm pretty sure that "Cuban inspired" means she will use similar techniques and flavors to Cuban food, but adapted to ingredients she can source mostly locally/seasonally rather than concentrating on "authenticity".

This is sooooo confusing...her new "Cuban inspired" restaurant will not serve Cuban food, but the menu will be centered on 2 things....a Cuban burger and Cuban beverage....thus making up the name...holy smokes this makes my writing genes just want to explode!
