Family flees kitchen fire in Ypsilanti Township home

By Ronald Ahrens

A kitchen fire caused members of an Ypsilanti Township family to flee their home this morning in the 700 block of Dorset Street, firefighters said.

No one was injured in the blaze blamed on unattended cooking, said Ypsilanti Township Fire Department Captain Kurt Owings.

One adult and several children were home when the grease fire erupted about 10:15 a.m. inside the single-family residence, but Owings said the residents managed to close doors as they fled the house, thereby keeping fresh air from feeding the flames.

“It had mostly died down” when crews arrived,” he said. “It wasn’t getting enough oxygen and was basically fizzling out.” Damage was estimated at $15,000.

Three engines and one rescue unit responded with a total of eight firefighters. Scorched cabinets were removed from the kitchen before the fire was declared under control after about 30 minutes.

Owings said the Washtenaw County Red Cross has assisted the family in finding temporary housing.

awesome job on the part of the crew....try handling that fire with less people in a year from now, which is going to be reality thanks to the near sighted politicians who are only looking at the small picture and who can contribute the most towards their reelection
