Father Gabriel Richard High School Top Scholars
Father Gabriel Richard High School held its 2011 graduation ceremonies May 26, 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. The class included 116 graduates.
Margaret Decker
Parents: Charlotte and David Decker
Activities and Awards: Margaret is president of the National Honor Society and a 2011 National Merit Finalist. In addition, she is the recipient of the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship. She has been awarded the Scholar Athlete Award in cheerleading and is currently the varsity captain. Margaret was honored with the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Solid Gold in Education Award. She has received both the University of Michigan Regents Scholarship and LEAD Scholarship.
Plans after graduation: Margaret will attend the Honors Program at the University of Michigan and major in biology.
Megan Flaherty
Parents: Dr. Kevin and Julie Flaherty
Activities and Awards: Valedictorian of the Class of 2011, Megan has been involved in student government where she has served as sophomore representative as well as class president both junior and senior years. She was named to the Scholastic All Catholic Team in both 11th and 12th grades and is a member of the National Honor Society. A scholar athlete, she has participated in soccer and cross country and received the Fighting Irish Scholar Athlete Award for cross country in 2010. During her senior year, Megan served as a KAIROS retreat leader.
Plans after graduation: Megan plans to attend the University of Dayton, where she will study pre-medicine.
Samantha Gioia
Parents: Thomas and Nancy Gioia
Activities and Awards: Samantha is a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of seven "Outstanding Student" class awards including AP U.S. History and German. This year, she received AP Scholar designation from the College Board. Samantha has been an active competitor in the equestrian sport of dressage all four years of high school. In both 2009 and 2010, she was a Northern American Anglo Arabian Horse Association Dressage Reserve Champion.
Plans after graduation: Samantha will attend the University of Michigan and study film within the Screen Arts and Cultures program.
Katherine Larin
Parents: John and Linda Larin
Activities and Awards: Katherine is a member of the National Honor Society and currently serves as secretary. She is the recipient of several "Outstanding Student" class awards. During her four years, she has participated in varsity volleyball and softball and has received both the Scholar Athlete Award and the Catholic League All Academic Award in volleyball. During her senior year, she served as a student leader in the KAIROS retreat program.
Plans after graduation: After graduation, Katherine plans to attend the University of Michigan.
Elena Perkins
Parents: Scott and Veronica Perkins
Activities and Awards: Elena is a member of the Drama Club, varsity cheer team and National Honor Society and is the pianist for the Madrigals Choir. She has served in student government as secretary of her class in both junior and senior year. This past year, she participated in the University of Michigan Cancer Research Summer Internship. In addition, she has interned at the University of Michigan surgical lab. During her senior year, Elena participated in a mission trip with her Spanish class to Guatemala.
Plans after graduation: Elena plans to attend the University of Michigan and major in biomedical engineering.
Alyssa Stella
Parents: Dr. Phil and Lynn Stella
Activities and Awards: Alyssa has been named salutatorian for the FGR Class of 2011. While in high school, she has served in student government as vice-president in both her junior and senior years. A National Honor Society member, she has been recognized with class awards in theology, U.S. history and Spanish. She is the founder and co-president of the FGR "Footloose" Jump Rope Club. Her volunteer involvement includes a mission trip to Nicaragua and chairing a service project for Hope Clinic "Share and Care Closet." Alyssa is a four-year varsity tennis player and co-captain of her team senior year.
Plans after graduation: After graduation, Alyssa will attend Boston College and study medicine.
Mark Theisen
Parents: Martha and Thomas Theisen
Activities and Awards: Mark is a 2011 National Merit Finalist and member of the National Honor Society. He has received a certificate of merit in the Michigan Math League competition and has been awarded a University of Michigan Regents Scholarship. A four year varsity hockey player, he was named captain his senior year and the recipient of the All Catholic Scholar Athlete Award. In addition, he has been a member of the cross country team. Mark was a member of the Faith in Action Club and also a student leader in the KAIROS retreat program.
Plans after graduation: Mark plans to attend the University of Michigan and study chemical engineering.
Brandon Weber
Parents: Peter and Janice Weber
Activities and Awards: Brandon is a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of highest academic honors all four years. He has been awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship at the University of Michigan/Dearborn. A member of the FGR varsity bowling team, he has been been named to the All State All Academic Team. He is a member of the 2011 State Championship Team.
Plans after graduation: After graduation, Brandon will attend the University of Michigan/Dearborn and major in biochemistry and pre-pharmacy.

Steve,the paragraph was slightly in error. Elena worked hard between her jr. and sr. year of high school in the surgical lab as an unpaid intern and earned impeccable references. She applied to CA research program as an incoming Freshman with great recommendations from previous PIs and instructors. She didn't think she had a shot at it. She learned there were over 360 applications and it seems the few they chose didn't necessarily have a lot of actual lab experience. Perhaps, they wanted to train them their way. She is currently, a registered in-coming Freshman.

how was elena able to participate in the the University of Michigan Cancer Research Summer Internship when the website indicates the position is only available to current freshman, sophomores or juniors?
