Feds award $835,000 grant to U-M for study of algal blooms

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The federal government has awarded $5.5 million for three Great Lakes protection projects in Michigan.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration designated the grants for the state and the University of Michigan.

The biggest, totaling $3 million, will provide plant and animal habitat in the Saugatuck area.

Additionally, the state will get $1.7 million to acquire property for ecological and conservation purposes in Houghton.

An $835,000 grant will go to the university for study of algal blooms and water quality in the Great Lakes.

The last Ann Arbor/Ypsi Reads selection was a book entitled The Living Great Lakes. I would probably not have read it if it had not been the selection, but I am very glad I did. It was an eye opener (and a very nice read, to boot). Until I read it, I did not fully appreciate the wide ranging impact of these precious waters. Yes, it IS a good investment, and YES it WILL support our economy! Readers should do just a little bit of homework before opening their mouths!

Hey! I've been studying water quality ever since my first trip to the beach, about 57 years ago. Where's my check?

After some research I would now like to voice my support for research into algal blooms. I would still be interested in knowing what the $850,000 pays for. Does it pay 1 professor and 1 helper? How much do they get paid? This does not change the fact that so much money has been wasted on worthless studies the last 50 years. Studies that have done little more than line the pockets of some researchers.

Right..why does it matter what the Great Lake's water quality is? In fact, let's bring back the 1960s that dead lake was so cool.

Is it any wonder this country is in the mess it's in? And it doesn't matter who is in the White House. Every administration for the last 50 years has spent our money on worthless studies! Handing out grants for the study of everything from snails to fill in the blank!

I would like to know the salary of the person at the U of M responsible for administering this $835,000 grant. Would anyone care to guess?

Gee, those lucky folks in Saugatuck! That's some money well spent...though, I'd rather see the money spent on something a bit more important, like "why is the sky blue?" or "what's for dinner?". Our government blows (and never a thank you for the tax $.$$ I've paid over the last 40 years......)
