Female victim reports 'grabbed buttocks' near U-M campus Saturday night

By Ben Freed

A 20-year-old woman reported that an unknown man grabbed her buttocks near University of Michigan campus Saturday night.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. the victim told Ann Arbor police that she was walking home from a party store and cut through a parking lot off of East University Avenue near the intersection of East University and Hill Street when she was approached by a male stranger.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the suspect reached around and grabbed the victim's buttocks before walking to his bicycle and riding away.

The suspect was described as a middle-aged black male approximately 5 feet 9 inches, wearing a blue hat, shorts, and a gray t-shirt.

Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP (773-2587).

A few decades back, that was my M.O. Not with strangers, of course, just with people I knew –– of both sexes. People would whirl around, and realize it was just me. As they said, "He doesn't have any retirement, but he's got a great pinchin' plan!"

Same thing happened to me on Liberty Street one evening about fifteen years ago, except the perpetrator was an undergrad-age female. Weird. Drunk, I guess.

Why is the "Motivation for success" story showing as related content to the "grabbed buttocks" story? A goose in every pot? You'll never walk alone? Trying to find the angle.

Hi Sooth, the reason is noted in the small text above that link: "Posted recently in News". The related story system basically pulls any stories that were either recently posted in the same category or have a shared tag, so in this situation we have no control of what is being pulled into that spot.

Did he at least drop a compliment before he rode away?

With all due respect Mr. Freed, I don't think your title fully reflects the serious nature of this crime. "Grabbed Buttocks" is not the name of this crime. This woman reported a sexual assault.

Not to diminish what happened, but Mr. Freed was apparently simply quoting from the police report (hence, the quotation marks). In other words, Mr. Freed was doing his job. Once (and if) charges are filed, it'll be up to the prosecutor (not Mr. Freed) to classify the offense. In his follow-up report, Mr. Freed will then be able to update us as to the exact charge(s) filed.
