Fire at Ziebart Tidy Car in Pittsfield Township was accidental, fire officials say

By Amalie Nash

A late-night fire at Ziebart Tidy Car in Pittsfield Township was caused by malfunctioning equipment, fire officials said this afternoon.

People leaving a nearby movie theater discovered the fire at the business at 4161 Carpenter Road just after 11 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters from four departments responded and brought the fire under control before it caused too much damage to the building, officials said. The 50-foot-by-200-foot building houses both Ziebart and Ann Arbor Transmissions.

No one was injured.

Fire Cmdr. Sean Gleason said fire investigators discovered an equipment malfunction caused the fire. No one was inside the business at the time.

Two cars were inside and had minor damage, Gleason said. A damage estimate hasn't yet been calculated, but Gleason said the equipment and other contents sustained the most damage.

It's unclear how long Ziebart will be closed, but Gleason said he expects the business could reopen by next week. A business owner could not be reached for comment this afternoon.
