Ann Arbor firefighters rescue pets from house fire

By Ann Dwyer

Ann Arbor firefighters rescued two dogs and four other small pets from a house fire this afternoon on the city's northside.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no reported injuries.

Neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of the residence in the 800 block of Larkspur Street. Fire crews made a hole in the roof for the smoke to escape so that they could work on the fire, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Cook.

At this time, the blaze appears to have started in the bedroom, although the cause is still under investigation, said Cook.

I know most folks here could seem to give a crap about our fire deparment in this city, but guess what... the firefighters that were there that day and save those people's pets... yeah, they're not going to be here next year unless we stand up. As the homeowner if they ever gave a crap about the FD before they had their pets saved.

Too bad by this time next year 14 of them will be gone and a station closed. So Mr. Mayor. You just going to roll the dice and pick a station to close? I hope it's not in my neighborhood. Then again, I'm one of the few residents that shows up to council meetings to make sure it doesn't happen to me. Maybe if more of my fellow A2'ers would care a little more we could stop this.

Hellooooo! Mr. Mayor! Roger Fraser! This may be news to you but you need an adequately staffed fire department!
