Fire damages apartment in American House Senior Living Community, but no residents injured
A kitchen fire in a second-floor apartment at the American House Senior Living Community in Pittsfield Township caused $80,000 damage early this morning, but residents escaped injury, officials said.
Firefighters were called to the three-story building at 3470 Carpenter Road at 12:40 a.m.
Pittsfield Fire Cmdr. Sean Gleason said the fire started on top of the stove and spread to the cabinets. It appears the resident may have accidentally turned on a burner on the stove, Gleason said.
When firefighters arrived, the resident was out of her apartment and was taken downstairs to the lobby, where she was evaluated by paramedics, Gleason said. She declined to be transported to the hospital.
She had been sleeping, and a smoke detector alerted her to the fire, Gleason said.
The first floor lobby was used as a safe area for additional residents who were evacuated during the fire due to smoke or water, reports said.
Firefighters contained the fire to the kitchen, but water and smoke damaged the apartment, reports said.
"The potential was there for the fire to spread, but it was quickly contained," Gleason said.
