A fire this morning damaged two units in an apartment house in the 300 block of North Adams Street, Ypsilanti fire officials said.

No one was injured in the 11:30 a.m. blaze, which broke out on the second-floor of the two-story home, fire Capt. Dan Cain said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Cain said. There are five apartments in the house - two upstairs and three downstairs - but Cain didn't know how many people were displaced. One unit on each floor was damaged.

About 18 firefighters from Ypsilanti, Superior Township, Ypsilanti Township and Ann Arbor responded, Cain said. They had the fire under control in about 15 minutes, he said.

Matt Fleming, 29, said he was getting ready for work in his second-floor apartment when smoke seeped into his bedroom.

He opened his bedroom door, and the living room filled with smoke, he said. Fleming rushed to his roommate's bedroom, woke him up, and both hurried outside.

"I was just glad I was able to get my roommate out of there," he said. "...I was just freaking out."

ugh! yes, there was mutual aid, read the story, "About 18 firefighters from Ypsilanti, Superior Township, Ypsilanti Township and Ann Arbor responded." i'm saying that relying on other fd's for mutual aid will spread thin those responding fd's. if we have 4 ff's per shift, a small fire could very well get out of hand and become a LARGE fire. i fully support the fd's and hate to see that pd's and fd's seem to be the first one's cut on account to public fear factor. scheezzz.....

dading, Ypsilanti city council did approve those cuts, though there is hope of a federal grant to save at least some of the jobs. Also, I see at least three different uniforms in that picture; it makes me wonder how many fire fighters were there from each department, and if they would have been able to enter the building if the townships had been out on calls of their own and unable to provide mutual aid.

@rodney, i am ABSOLUTELY NOT criticizing the amount on scene. i am point out that if it takes (6 in picture), but a total of 18 from 3 other municipalities put out this fire, imagine how this would turn out if ONLY 4 were on site, as city council is proposing. it would be bad news. i'd keep posting, but don't want it to be taken down for hurting feelings.

take note...i count 6 firefighters in this picture and it was (not belittling it) a second story apartment fire. heaven forbid there were only 4 as being proposed by city council... think about it...
