Fire destroys Ypsilanti Township home

By Lee Higgins

A fire gutted a home this morning in the Swan Creek mobile home community on McKean Road, Ypsilanti Township Fire Capt. Brad Johnson said.

No one was home during the 5:54 a.m. blaze, but a pet cat died, Johnson said.

The fire started in a bedroom, and the cause remains under investigation, Johnson said.

A neighbor kicked in a door to the home in an attempt to make sure any pets inside could get out, Johnson said.

The neighbor was alerted to the blaze by his German Shepherd, who jumped on his bed and woke him up, Johnson said. The neighbor's wife called 911.

The fire caused a total of $60,000 damage to the home and its contents.
