When Hannah Stalhandske was induced for labor around 8 p.m. on Thursday, already six days past her due date, she hoped to give birth that same day.

But the baby, it seems, was determined to be born in 2011.

Stalhandske gave birth to daughter Annikah at 12:06 a.m. today at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, making her the first baby born in Washtenaw County in the new year.

"I was hoping she'd be born around Christmas," said Stalhandske, 21, of Chelsea. "But I didn't think about (her being born in the new year). It just worked out that way."

Stalhandske, who is studying to be a veterinarian technician at Baker College, was joined during delivery by her mother, Ann Stalhandske of Chelsea. Annikah weighed 8 lbs when she was born.

"She is quiet and cooperative," Stalhandske said of her new daughter, who is her first child. "It's great and I am very excited."

The first baby born in 2011 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital was Brooklyn Neher.

Like Stalhandske, Christie Neher, 31, of Canton, was due on Dec. 24. Her water broke early this morning and she gave birth to Brooklyn at 6:20 a.m.

The baby is her fourth child. Neher and her husband, Jason Neher, 32, also have an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old.

"My 5-year-old loves her," Neher said of baby Brooklyn. "She thinks it's her own little doll."

She would really have been a first if they could have named her Aardvark. (sorry - just had to say that)

That's just like a girl--come when she's ready and not one minute before. It was probably in her plan all along to be the first born in Washtenaw County.
