Food Gatherers looking for big final day to meet 2012 Rockin' For The Hungry donation goal

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The 2012 Rockin' For The Hungry food drive is entering its final day Sunday. Since Wednesday, Food Gatherers volunteers have collected more than 100 tons of food and financial donations from donors to help serve those in need in Washtenaw County.

Numerous volunteers have shown up to lend a hand with the food drive over the past few days despite the rain and brisk temperatures. With the help of large and small donations, the goal of 200 tons is in sight. Suggested donation items for those of you heading to the store today include items such canned soups, beans, baking mixes, pasta and peanut butter.

You can track the donations here on AnnArbor.com as they are reported in by the volunteers on site at the Kroger on S. Maple Road where AnnArbor's 107one will continue to host their live broadcast between 11 a.m and 4 p.m.

Financial and non-perishable food donations will continue to be accepted at all Washtenaw County Kroger locations throughout the day, including the Plymouth Road store where an additional remote live broadcast will be taking place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

I am glad that they do this type of thing every year for the hungry and the homeless. Nothing against Food Gatherers at all but some of the other groups around the county in my mind are worthless. I won't mention any of them but one that I truly hate will never get a penny from me if I ever hit the lottery and go to find places to donate money. Right now I am living on disability and signed up to get a turkey for Thanksgiving. I waited and waited but never heard anything. A week before the holiday, I called the group and was told I didn't get a turkey because I was a family of 1 and I should be able to afford getting my own things. REALLY? I am disabled and being told I didn't get one because I don't have a family but myself if just screwed up. I will rot in my grave before this group EVER got anything from me. Yeah I know, I could have gone and had a nice dinner at the shelter or to one of the places that offered free meals but it's kind of hard to get around when I have no car, buses not running on the holiday and the ride share program the bus system has set up don't go to where I live at. The volunteers for Food Gatherers do a great job and I am glad they are around. Maybe one day I will be able to move into Ann Arbor and have the ability to get to a holiday meal and spend it with someone even though they may be strangers me, I wouldn't be eating alone or being denied a simple task because of not having a family. There is only one word I can think of calling these people but I can't put it on here or AA.com will delete my post. Just remember folks, if you know of someone in the area during the holidays and know they are unable to go any where because of no car and no bus service/ride share, give them a call and ask if maybe they would like to join you for a nice holiday dinner or maybe call and tell them that you are bring them a plate of food so they can have a nice Holiday meal themselves. You may not think it means anything to them but it does feel good.

Some last-minute donations helped push Food Gatherers over its goal last year. Hopefully that's the case today! http://bit.ly/aadc-rfh2011

It's hard to imagine a more worthy charity. Feeding your neighbors is about as local as it gets, and Food Gatherers does it at incredibly high efficiency and low overhead. If there's any way for you to manage to contribute some food or dollars, please try to get out to any of the nearby Kroger stores today.
