Former Milan woman must pay restitution or face incarceration for intentional house fire

By Art Aisner

Tifany Mapes will have to pay back nearly $117,000 she bilked from her insurance provider after an arson fire gutted her former home in Milan, court records show.

Mapes, 20, will have to pay the money back as a condition of her five-year probation or she faces jail time under a sentencing agreement with Circuit Judge David Swartz. He also ordered her to repay roughly $2,400 in tax refunds she received as part of a home-loan program.

The Dundee woman pleaded no contest to one count of arson of insured property the day her trial was to begin in September. Multiple counts of arson and insurance fraud were dismissed.

Authorities charged Mapes earlier this year after her former lover, Christopher Bandy, told federal investigators he set the April 2009 blaze at Mapes’ previous home, located at 125 Hack St., at her request. Bandy, described by investigators as a serial pipe bomber, is currently serving more than eight years in federal prison for setting off multiple bombs in Whitmore Lake and in Livingston County.

He also faced multiple felonies related to the Milan house fire, but prosecutors agreed to drop those as part of his plea deal with federal authorities, as long as he continues to cooperate with ongoing investigations.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured. Mapes, who purchased the home for $58,000 just three months earlier, received a $120,000 insurance settlement.

She declined the opportunity to address the court before sentencing.
