Former Washtenaw County Commissioner hired as Monroe County administrator

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A former Washtenaw County commissioner has been tapped to lead Monroe County as its administrator and chief financial officer.

Robert Brackenbury, who served on the county board for two terms from 2003 to 2006, was hired this week and expects to start his new position in two to three weeks. His contract is still being negotiated.

Brackenbury, a current Michigan assistant attorney general, will lead a county of 670 employees with a general fund budget of $55 million.

"I've always been focused on government at the local and state level, and this seemed like an ideal fit," Brackenbury said today.

Brackenbury, 44, resigned from the county board in 2006 because of family and education obligations. His seat, representing Pittsfield Township, was filled by his wife, Mandy Grewal.

Grewal is now the supervisor of Pittsfield Township.

Brackenbury is a spectacular choice, and anyone knowledgable in the least with city, county, and state government knows that Monroe Country just got lucky to attract such a person. The county needs a fiscally savvy person--Brackenbury--a person who knows and has practiced law--Brackenbury--and a person who can coordinate with state government--Brackenbury. This is going to be a tough job at a tough time. I'm giving Brackenbury the best chance of anyone I can imagine.
