A family of four was displaced by a fire this afternoon that significantly damaged their Maplehurst Drive home, Ypsilanti Township fire officials said.

The parents and two children weren't home during the blaze, which firefighters responded to about 2:21 p.m., said township Fire Marshal Phil Stachlewitz.

The cause of the fire in the road's 6200 block remains under investigation. There was heavy fire damage to the garage, Stachlewitz said.

Neighbor Chris Smith said she called 911 after one of her children, who was playing outside, "saw smoke billowing from the garage."

About 10 firefighters responded to the home in the Parkside Preserve West subdivision, Stachlewitz said.

Stachlewitz did not have a damage estimate. The Red Cross has been called to assist the family.

Family members on scene declined to comment.

i drove by this house this morning. sad, any home fire is sad. i'd like to point out that BOTH houses were ranch styles and fires seemed to originate in the garage...?
