What would you name 4 new peregrine falcon chicks hatched on University Hospital roof?

For the second year in a row, the University of Michigan Hospital is playing incubator to four peregrine falcon chicks. The chicks hatched May 2 in a nesting box on the hospital roof in Ann Arbor, the University Record reported.

U-M is conducting a contest on its Facebook page for the public to name the baby chicks, which were born to the same nesting couple that parented three chicks last year. As of about 8:30 Wednesday morning, the request for name suggestions had already elicited 272 responses.

Among the suggestions: Eanie, Meanie, Miny and Mo and many football-themed names, including Bo, Lloyd, Desmond, and Woodson. U-M said it would launch a poll on Monday to choose the winning names.

Two peregrines have been seen around Ann Arbor since 2006, most often on Burton Tower, but they had not been successful nesting there, said Karen Cleveland, an all-bird biologist with the DNR. Cleveland said she brought a nesting box to University Hospital, where it was installed. The birds soon set up housekeeping in the box, and last spring, hatched three chicks. Another box was installed at North Quad.

Unfortunately, one of the fledgling chicks was shot last summer, but the birth of these new chicks is good news for falcon watchers. It’s possible the hospital could be the birth spot for more chicks in future years.

It’s not uncommon for peregrine falcons to use the same nest site for many years, the university said in a press release about the falcons’ birth. In urban areas, peregrine pairs tend to nest on tall buildings or bridges, which simulate high cliffs and ledges, making the University Hospital rooftop a prime location, the university said.

Certainly, one should be Perry. Then there's Edie (Falco), then just Falco ("Rock me Amadeus"), and Felix (just 'cause Felix the Falcon sounds cool).

Should they really be handling those chicks? Will mama reject them? I really don't have any idea about this but I know it happens with other creatures.

Oh, how wonderful. They are such beautiful birds of prey. And why not give them names? It gives us a closer connection to them and thus we care for them more. Name them after the founding fathers of the U of M or give them silly nicknames.

Why is it a given that they should be named at all?

ESprout

Wed, May 30, 2012 : 2:56 p.m.

Because it's fun. It engages the community. It gives those who care a closer connection to the story. It allows people to get creative and share their ideas. It gives people something to do...something to think about that isn't rape or murder or war or stupid government officials. Are those good enough reasons?

Hmm

Wed, May 30, 2012 : 2:16 p.m.

Good point, they are not pets they're wild animals and should be treated as such.
