@ChelseaGirl - Autopsies are often mandatory for various reasons. Plus, like ThaKillaBee said, he could very well have had a heart attack which caused him to lose consciousness and go down. That kind of information is valuable to the family for both family medical history purposes and for peace of mind. Oftentimes, grieving families want to know "why," so I think it is perfectly reasonable for them to have an autopsy to answer that question so they can have closure.

One can drown and not die. Death due to drowning is different from drowning. And I will bet he suffered a heart attack or anxiety attack. Liquid in the lungs is drowning. Death is caused when the lungs can no longer produce enough oxygen due to the volume of water in the lungs.

@ThaKillaBee~perhaps, bottom line though will it make a difference, no. Is it just an additional expense for the family to have to pay? I hope not.

@ChelseaGirl - Yeah, that sounds a little silly but I presume they want to find out if maybe he had a heart attack or something else that caused him to drown.

Cause of death? Didn't he drown?
