Last Thursday’s bank robbery reminded me of a bungled robbery in 2007 at another bank on the city's south side. In that case, two of the robbers were caught and sent to prison and the third who caused their capture got away.

In that case, the robbers parked their customized car a few blocks away in an apartment complex parking lot. They left their trusted getaway car driver and their tricked-out ride with the powerful sound system and DVD system in the lot, and trudged off toward the bank.

They robbed the bank and made their escape, running westbound from the bank toward their getaway car, driver, and freedom. These master criminals had all the details worked out to commit the perfect crime.

Ann Arbor police are seeking this man in last Thursday's robbery. If you recognize him, call 734-794-6930, ext. 49318.

The problem with tactical planning for good guys or bandits is that moments after the plan is initiated, something happens that throws the plan completely off track. Therefore, good tactical planners always have contingency plans.

Good police officers plan their response to crimes in progress well before they ever get the call. Cops know the targets of crime in their patrol areas and plan how they would respond and how a bad guy would try to get away. Police officers are great at adapting quickly to changing circumstances. Cops understand that plans must be fluid to be successful.

These bank robbers had their plan, and it seemed to be working - right up until the time they got back to the getaway car.

It seems the trusted getaway car driver had been bored in the bandits’ absence and decided to amuse himself by listening to the powerful sound system and watching a porn movie on the DVD player. While enjoying all that high quality entertainment, the getaway driver had neglected leave the engine running. When the winded bandits jumped in the car ... the battery was dead.

The trio fled on foot in three different directions. One was caught in a Dumpster. One was caught trying to hail a cab. The well-rested and entertained getaway driver got away and has not been charged.

Not to worry though - a criminal genius like that driver won’t quit crime. In the immortal words of author Kinky Friedman, “Justice rides a slow horse but it always overtakes.”

He will get caught, and so will the wild-eyed little bandits that robbed the bank last Thursday.

Keep it locked, don’t leave it unattended, be aware and watch out for your neighbors.
