Girl taken to hospital after near drowning in Webster Township

By Lee Higgins

A 7-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in good condition this afternoon after she nearly drowned in a Webster Township pool, where she was swimming with family members, Dexter Area Fire Assistant Chief John Zahn said.

The girl's father pulled her from the pool in the 7800 block of Walsh Road about 1:35 p.m. and performed CPR after she was unresponsive, Zahn said.

After a couple of chest compressions, the girl began coughing up water and started talking, Zahn said. She was underwater for about a minute. Her father was at the opposite end of the pool when he noticed she was underwater, Zahn said.

"The father did an excellent job," Zahn said. "It could have been a lot worse."

Family members told fire officials that the girl knew how to swim, Zahn said. The girl was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be evaluated.

I am so glad this 7 year old is safe! Good, quick response by this father. It would be a great idea to enroll this little one in swim classes as soon as possible, before she develops a life-long fear of the water. Blessings to this family!
