Got a question for a Michigan State Police trooper? Just ask

By Trooper Duane Zook

Behind the Blue Line — Michigan State Police Duane Zook takes your law enforcement questions:

The Michigan State Police Ypsilanti post has a new position — community service trooper (CTS). I took on that role last month, and it entails working in the community, with schools and helping to solve any problems that arise.

As part of that role, I want to reach out and answer questions people have. Do you want to know a traffic law? How an investigation is run? Where to go for help if you see someone in need? Just ask.

Each week on Tuesday, I'll answer questions on this site that I get via e-mail or through the comments below.

And I welcome you to pose any question you may have. Just send me an e-mail at ypsilantipost@gmail.com.

Trooper Zook Please see the web site http://soldiers22.angelfire.com/RaiseMoney.html It could be the answer to your cause to help the needy. But it would require them to do some work.... Bill

The current plan is that Trooper Zook will take a few questions each week that he receives by e-mail — and in the comments — and answer them here on Tuesdays so everyone will have the questions/answers. He may also personally respond to e-mails if it seems more appropriate to directly reply. His e-mail is working, and he said today that he's received a good number of e-mailed questions and is hoping for more!

Warm welcome to the community (State Trooper Duane Zook) ! We need someone like you to answer questions. I hope the same guidelines pertain to you as well. I have already heard all my life, that no question is stupid. (but afraid you might get some). I don't have a question at this time, but may in time. Good Luck in your new position!

Before these comments are pulled as completely irrelevant to the topic (which they are) I just want to thank Eyeheart, Bluefire and Atticus for giving me a good laugh this morning.

Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?

@Bluefire: How do know so much about swallows?

Mr. Zook, When riding a moped (engine size 49cc or under) am I required to also have a valid drivers license in the state of Michigan to operate it on our roadways? Or is a registration sticker from the Sec of State sufficient?

Um...I think you're supposed to send your questions to his e-mail address listed in the article. Mr. Zook, this is a great idea and will generate lots of discussions. Thank you for offering this.

@ missy, If that's the case, Rex Ryan's wife could be in a lot of trouble..... Mr. Zook, How often are radar/laser guns calibrated and tested?

In some states it's illegal, but as a barefoot all summer type of gal, I know for a fact it is perfectly legal to drive barefoot in the State of Michigan! :)

Mr. Zook - When turning left from a turning lane onto a two lane road is it a law that one must go from the turning lane onto the inside lane, or is it just good driving sense? If two opposing cars try to go from turning lane to outside lane they cross and often only two cars can turn per light change. An example would be turning left from Seventh onto Huron. Thank you for this forum.

Mr. Zook - Welcome. Great column idea. How is it determined whether state, county, city, township, or village, etc. department will handle a call, and/or become involved in an investigation? And, are there times when township, or village (e.g.) involvement might be considered not appropriate. Two random examples to help: An impoverished village operating interstate highway speed traps. Same locality dealt an investigation way over their heads in terms of experience or resources. Thanks. Your column should prove quite popular here.
