Gov. Snyder receives "C" grade on green issues from Michigan League of Conservation Voters

By Kody Klein

Gov. Rick Snyder received a "C" in the Michigan League of Conservation Voters' "How Green is Your Governor?" midterm report card, based on his first two years in office and issues including land conservation, water quality and personnel appointments.

The full report analyzes 95 actions, including bill signings, vetoes, appointments, executive orders, permit approvals and denials. It considered 49 of those actions positive, while 17 were called neutral and 29 were determined to be negative.

The non-partisan organization, which maintains offices in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, said that despite Snyder's environmentally conscious public statements, he has too often let the "anti-conservation Legislature lead on environmental issues regardless of significant public opposition."

"We would love nothing more than to assign Governor Snyder an A+ on the next Report Card and have him proudly take it home and pin it to the refrigerator,” the organization wrote in summarizing its evaluation. “For now, though, if we were to scrawl a quick note at the bottom of this one it would simply say that ‘the Governor shows remarkable potential, but he has yet to really apply himself. As a bit of a nerd, he must better stand up for himself when confronted by bullies in the Legislature.’”

Kurt Weiss, a spokesman for the governor’s office, said the governor's average grade is unacceptable and his office will "continue to work hard on environmental issues," alluding to comments Snyder made during his State of the State Address about re-establishing a Great Lakes water use advisory council.

"When the governor delivered his special message on energy and the environment, most of those actions were commented on," Weiss said. "That’s a positive thing. I think that shows the governor has the right vision about energy in Michigan."

The report assessed grades in eight areas. The League of Conservation Voters gave Snyder an A in transportation and a B in agriculture, citing his support for high-speed rail, mass transit and legislation designed to help farmers minimize their environmental impact.

But he received an F in toxics and hazardous chemicals and a D in clean air and energy in part because of his support for coal-fired power plants and a deep-injection well for storing hazardous materials in Romulus. Snyder also opposed a 2012 ballot proposal to increase renewable energy in Michigan, the report noted.

The report card also made recommendations for the governor's next two years, including protecting public lands from an "assault" by lawmakers and promoting safe methods of hydraulic fracking for extracting natural gas.
