Grass fire backs up traffic on U.S. 23 in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

Efforts to extinguish a grass fire on U.S. 23 near Washtenaw Avenue were slowing traffic on the freeway on the east side of Ann Arbor Saturday afternoon.

A dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said the fire was in the median just south of Washtenaw Avenue. The heaviest traffic backup appeared to be on southbound U.S. 23.

The dispatcher said firefighters were finishing up with the fire shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday.

Just wait until all the new fireworks Snyder okayed for Michigan start being fired off in populated areas. I am dreading it myself. Fire fighters are going to be very busy. It is a tinder box in SE Michigan right now.

This was mentioned at our neighborhood watch last week. I think cherry bombs and something else, trying to remember, but if I am correct in remembering, unless it goes higher then a house, it is legal. Can't wait until July 4. I do remember some neighbors setting off fireworks near a school. One neighbor complained and the funny thing about it was that the fire marshal was the one over seeing it when the neighbor complained. I would talk to the township or city and see what they suggest. Otherwise? Have fun shooting off the works.

Again pointless and meaningless ( and again typical ) making something legal or not illegal is not a law.Try again

Cash....just to reply to your ( left wing libbys) typical and meaningless shot at Synder.I've been buying just about any type of fireworks at exit 1 ( in Michigan ) off of US 23 for years ( like 11 yrs ).The way the law is written you can buy, sell and posses fireworks that blow up in Michigan. You just can't set them off. The only thing you can't buy are class B ( I think ) fireworks. So sorry, nothing has changed since Jenny for all practical purposes.Nice try though.

This can happen anywhere with dry grass and a cigarette flung out a window...I've witnessed that. Just another added benefit to not smoking.

My comment was more in response to u812..."Michigan the new Death valley"...the point being that these fires can happen anywhere and I've witnessed it from something as small, and to some as meaningless, as a cigarette flung out the window. I should've known, though, that some would immediately jump on that and take offense because of their own bad habits.

In California brush fires can start from anything. Including what is mentioned here. From reflections off sunglases to mirrors, it is dry out there, so we either need to water down our lawns or be careful of what you set off.

Except for that one reported recently that was ignited by sunlight beating down on broken glass.
