The Ann Arbor Out of the Darkness suicide prevention walk is planned for Sept. 19 at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor.

The event is hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The walk is meant to show support for family and friends of the 33,000 people in the U.S. who die by suicide each year and the 20 million people who suffer from depression.

It is also meant to raise money for local and nationwide suicide prevention research and education programs.

Fundraiser at Detroit Zoo approaching

The 2010 Walkin' on the Wild Side for Hemophilia event will occur late next month to benefit the Ypsilanti-based Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan's programs and services.

The event, which takes place at the Detroit Zoo, is planned for Sunday, Aug. 29 and will feature entertainment and prizes for all ages. Registration begins with breakfast at 7:45 a.m. with the walk beginning at 8:45 a.m.

The HFM is looking to raise $100,000 and have 1,000 walkers.

Registration costs $15 per person and includes all day admission to the zoo, refreshments and a T-shirt. Each donation of $100 enters the donor in a drawing for prizes, including an Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle or 50" plasma TV.


Internet safety for kids

Parents - not quite sure where to draw the line when it comes to your kids and the Internet?

A "Net Smart workshop for parents: Health and the Internet" event will be hosted next month at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, hosted by the Washtenaw Area Council for Children. The event is meant to teach parents the health impact that online activities can have on their children, as well as a better understanding of how to make using the Internet safer and potential issues to watch for. Pizza will be served.

The event will be held Aug. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at 1819 S. Wagner Road in Ann Arbor.

Understanding health care reform implementation

A half-day health care seminar to better understand sweeping changes made to the U.S. health care system earlier this year will be hosted by Kapnick Insurance Group next week.

The event will be held Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 7:30 a.m. to noon at St. John's Golf and Conference Center, 44045 Five Mile Road.

Janet Trautwein, chief executive officer of the National Association of Health Underwriters, will be the keynote speaker.
