Holiday health: 9 top tips for keeping your holiday eating in check

By Tina Reed

Yes, it's another holiday season that's big on eating. And the University of Michigan recently released a list of tips to help you stay on track and eat right during the festive few weeks left.

"The good news is that you can still enjoy these special occasions as long as you use a bit of restraint and keep yourself from indulging too much,” Joan Daniels, a dietitian at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center said in a release.

Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink - but one that's packed with calories.

Here are some tips she and cancer center dietitian Nancy Burke offered:

1. Eat before you go: Don't allow yourself to go to an event hungry, but grab a snack that's high in protein, like cottage cheese, nuts or chicken, to help you eat less later.

2. Remember fiber: It keeps you fuller, longer. Get it from fruits and vegetables.

3. Be picky: Especially important at buffets, pick and choose only the items you really want to eat and keep the portions small.

4. Slow down: Eat slower and pay attention to signals that you're full.

5. Plan ahead: Don't let holiday hurrying steer you into eating junk food or fast food too often. Prepare healthy meals ahead of time.

6. Bring the healthy dish: When heading to holiday parties, volunteer to take the healthy dish so you know there will be at least one healthy, and tasty, item there.

7. Don't try to lose weight: Don't be unrealistic, but set a goal to maintain your weight throughout the holidays.

8. Watch those drinks: Calories from alcoholic drinks can add up fast and some beverages, like eggnogs and other drinks made with syrups, are some of the worst offenders.

9. Get moving: Being physically active can relieve stress during the holidays and can help maintain your weight.
