Holmes Elementary wins $1,500 award for leadership in school improvement

By Kyle Feldscher

Holmes Elementary School in Willow Run was one of four schools in the state recognized for demonstrating leadership in school improvement and gains in student achievement among urban school systems.

The school was named a winner of the 2010 Robert and Patricia Muth Excellence in Leadership Award, presented by Middle Cities Education Association. The school won $1,500 as a recipient of the award.

The other three schools were Hoover Elementary in Wayne-Westland, Romulus Elementary and Springfield Middle School in Battle Creek.

The MCEA is a coalition of 33 urban school districts in Michigan. The award is named in honor of Dr. Robert Muth and his wife, who began the award in 1989 after Dr. Muth’s retirement as executive director of the MCEA.

Jeff, We were there at the same time. I had Ms Jaffe for Kindergarden, Ms Beck for First and Second grades, and my third grade class was the first to use the new wing on the back of the school.

Congratulations. I went to Holmes K-3 until I moved to Willis in 1963 and remember the atom bomb drills in the glass hallway outside the lunch room. Didn't seem to be a good idea to me at the time.
