By Courtney Sacco

Here are images from Ann Arbor's Dancing in the Streets.

The annual event returned to portions of Main Street and Washington Street on Sunday from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

Dances included swing and ballroom, international folk styles, contra, waltz, English country dance and the Charleston.

It was organized by the Ann Arbor Community of Traditional Music and Dance.

They closed Main street! How dare they, don't they know that people need to get to and from downtown on weekends! Oh wait, AA only cares if Main is closed for the U on football Saturdays, my apologies.

Lots of Ann Arbor's finest talent coming out to make this event happen! Great dance leaders, fine musicians, talented sound persons, many many hands-on volunteers and year 'round organizers. Pure Ann Arbor. I agree with brimble's comment: Susan Filipiak's Swing City Dance Studio is a real treasure!!! Anyone thinking of taking dance classes should check it out. And the belly dancers, swing dancers, contras, etc etc... all have ongoing activities in the community. Take advantage of it, folks!

The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps will be accepting new members this fall. Kids between 12-18 are welcome to join and no experience is necessary. Members perform across Michigan during the summer and travel to historic locations in places such as Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Quebec for 10 days each August. It's a great group. You can find more information on the website at pfdc.us

Susan Filipiak's Swing City Dance Studio is one of those "hidden" gems in Ann Arbor - for adults and kids alike! So, too, are all of the people and resources and events connected to the Ann Arbor Community of Traditional Music and Dance!

I'm sure that AACTMD is a good organization, but my wife and I had a different experience the few times we tried to join into dances out at the Grange. I don't know if they are still held out there, but the few times we went as beginners, we were not welcomed and people were yelling at us because we made some mistakes trying to learn new steps. Not a welcoming situation to say the least.

Disappointed that we missed this- looks like a wonderful family event.

Nice photos - particularly the Contra Dance shot. (Note that the description is a bit mangled though. Reword that?) We should have dancing in the streets once a month. One big monthly dance party.

Troupe Ta'amullat is good, but Troupe Habibat al-Fen has reigned for decades.
