The University of Michigan held its winter commencement on Sunday at Crisler Arena.

The ceremony began at 2 p.m. and concluded around 4 p.m. The university’s honorary degrees and bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees were conferred during this program.

Jill Ellen Abramson, executive editor of The New York Times, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the university and served as keynote speaker for the exercises.

Photographer Jeff Smith captured these images.

Wow, did annarbor.com forget to drive over to EMU to cover their commencement? You know, the students at EMU work just as hard to earn their college degrees as those students from UM. I feel like the EMU students were really slighted by the lack of coverage...

Jill Abramson delivered what had to be one of the WORST commencement addresses I've ever heard. Starting out by telling the new grads that things suck and don't expect to get a job, then about 10 minutes of I, ME, I, ME, ME, followed by a pitch for the NYT. Really pathetic. C'mon, is this the best that UofM can get? I'd like to hear from some of today's grads: was this an uplifting and inspiring send-off?
