Incumbent Carsten Hohnke wins big in Ann Arbor's 5th Ward

By Kyle Feldscher

Ann Arbor City Council Member Carsten Hohnke, D-5th Ward, fended off two challengers to win a second term on the council.

With nine of 11 precincts reporting, Hohnke had garnered about 70 percent of the votes — 5,700 total. Republican John Floyd trailed with 21 percent of the vote, while Newcombe Clark — running without party affiliation — had just 9 percent.

Incumbent Carsten Hohnke won big.

Absentee ballots have yet to be counted.

Hohnke is a native Ann Arborite who works as an economic development professional with the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and is co-owner of Vie Fitness & Spa in downtown Ann Arbor with his wife and three other partners.

He serves on the Washtenaw Area Transportation Study Policy Committee and as a member of the city's Environmental Commission, Greenbelt Advisory Commission, Audit Committee and Student Relations Advisory Committee.

Clark, also a native Ann Arborite, is a vice president at Jones Lang LaSalle, a global commercial real estate firm with an office in Detroit. He is past president of the Main Street Area Association, in addition to a long list of other civic involvement.

Floyd, whose background is in financial and accounting services, has taught political economy at DePaul University and has experience as a budget analyst for the state of Illinois and as a financial control professional for business and nonprofit organizations.

@annarbor.com: pls remove somewhat concerned's posting supra. The labeling of Newcomb/his real estate transactions as rotten is unsubstantiated and name calling.

Carsten Hohnke took a brave and independent stand against the Council Party by opposing inappropriate development projects in neighborhoods and won big. Mr. Floyd, while less adamant against these projects, did support Ann Arbor's historic districts and their expansion to form a "charm zone" around the central downtown. He made a decent showing in this race. Clark, on the other hand, a partner in the two most notoriously bad development projects opposed by Hohnke, along with annarbor.com, tried to make Hohnke's support of Ann Arbor's zoning, master plans, and public sentiment into an issue in this election and failed miserably. Others on Council, especially those facing re-election this coming year, should take heed of this. The citizens of this city take great pride in their neighborhoods and the small college town character they provide. Carsten studied the master plans and zoning and listened to the citizen's, and as a result, achieved a huge victory. As long as he maintains this thoughtful and citizen-centric approach to issues, and continues to not be married to the Council Party line, he should have a bright political future.

Hope Hohnke is a little more responsive to citizens of Ann Arbor this term than he was last. Well, he could hardly be LESS responsive than he has been. Disappointing...

Sad To see that voters chose this guy who didn't even show up to the debates. The only thing this tells me is people only voted for him because he is democrat. Nothing more....

At least it's not Clark, but we probably haven't heard the last of him, his grandiose arrogance and his rotten real estate deals.

Brainless Democrats pulling the plunger for the official Democrat. John Floyd is better at living up to Democrat values than Carsten ever will.
