Intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads closes for crash

By Julie Baker

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office expects the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads to be closed for several hours following a crash Tuesday evening.

A Nixle alert sent around 6:50 p.m. advises motorists to avoid the intersection, north of Dexter, for the next several hours as the intersection is closed and traffic is being detoured.

Just before 7 p.m., a county dispatcher said he could not provide any details about the crash.

Riding a bike at night? The crash occurred before 6:50 pm. The sunset was not until 9:17 pm. The crash occurred in full daylight and visibility could not have been a factor. Some of you are confusing the time that the road was closed for the investigation, which was until approximately 10 pm. , with the time of the crash.

From Dexter Patch: Bicyclist Killed in Accident Near North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney Road A 53-year-old woman was killed while riding her bike in Dexter Township on Tuesday. By Daniel Lai Email the author 9:43 pm Email Print Comment The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a 53-year-old bicyclist was killed in an accident near the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads on Tuesday. According to Derrick Jackson, community engagement director, a female cyclist was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on North Territorial Road around 6:05 p.m. "By all accounts, the woman was an experienced bicyclist, wore a helmet and was following all the proper safety precautions," Jackson said. "From what we know at this point, she stopped off on the side of the road near Bear Claw Coffee." At some point the woman attempted to cross North Territorial Road to head southbound on Dexter-Pinkney Road when she was struck by the vehicle. The name of the victim is being withheld until deputies can contact her family, Jackson said. "Obviously we need to investigate this further, but it appears that the driver saw the victim at the last minute and tried to stop," Jackson said. A Nixle alert sent around 6:50 p.m. advising motorists to avoid the intersection, north of Dexter, for the next several hours as the intersection is closed and traffic is being detoured. Oh dear...a motorcyclist or a bicyclist? I've seen both out and about on these roads lately...lovely weather for a ride...car and truck drivers must be extra cautious! I can't imagine riding a bike out this way. Not much shoulder and no bike lanes of course, and sometimes you have to slow way down for a long period of time to safely move past the slow-moving biker. Motorcyclists of course have their own issues out there in terms of visibility to big ol' cars and trucks, but cyclists seem so very vulnerable.

Thank you Jason for letting us know. I knew it must be bad for the road to be closed for that long of an investigation. This area out here is great for motorcycles and gets a lot of motorcycle traffic. My prayers are with all involved and the family of the deceased.

Very sad. Car hit a cyclist. Cyclist has passed away. No details. Prayers for the families involved.
