Keech Avenue to open before first University of Michigan football game

By Jessica Kerman

After months of being closed, Keech Avenue next to Michigan Stadium is expected to reopen in September.

John Brink, project manager for the city of Ann Arbor, said the goal was for the road to reopen before the first football game this season. The first University of Michigan home football game is Sept. 5.

A lane of Main Street will be closed to inbound traffic on football Saturdays to accommodate pedestrians, Brink said.

“Because of the renovation, there’s fencing along the side, but there is not as much sidewalk space,” he said. “We’re going to do it the same as we did last year.”

Next year, Main Street will have an extended lane closure from March through July. The Ann Arbor City Council approved the lane closure in April.

U-M asked for the closure to prevent passing vehicles from being exposed to hazards while the wall running along the road is being finished. All lanes will be reopened for the Art Fairs.
