Labor Day holiday travelers can expect a construction zone reprieve
Good news if you're headed out of town for Labor Day weekend - many orange barrels will be pushed aside in construction zones.
The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to remove over two-thirds of lane restrictions on state routes this weekend to accommodate Labor Day holiday traffic.
Locally, two construction zones will see changes:
• I-94 between the Jackson/Washtenaw county line and Parker Road will have two lanes open in each direction with a shoulder closure. (See a past story on this project.)
• I-96 between US-23 and the Livingston/Oakland county line will have three lanes maintained in each direction with a traffic shift.
The lane restrictions will be lifted at 3 p.m. Friday and won't be back in place until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. According to MDOT, an estimated 1.4 million people will travel throughout Michigan this holiday weekend.
Before drivers head out, they can check www.michigan.gov/drive for holiday travel information. A complete list of the active construction projects and more information is available here.
